liliummadara:

It was not the first time a family member pulled mangekyou on him. It was the first time Itachi did, though. Pulling mangekyou on him.

“Easy, easy!” Madara said fast. “I will comply,” Madara let go of Itachi’s hands to step back, and use his hands as a wall between their chests.. “So I’m beginning to understand. This is your limit: Sasuke. I’ll leave him be.”

“Do not involve him.” He repeats, his tone just barely quieter. If Madara acquiesces, Itachi has no reason to be so aggressive. The Mangekyo is still a great burden to bear, and the strain shows in how blood pools from his tear duct.

Itachi lowers his head, briefly, drawing the sleeve of his cloak up to wipe it away. …He just threatened one of the most powerful men in the world. But it was worth it. Anything was worth it for Sasuke.

liliummadara:

Ohoooo? Was this getting to Itachi? Good. “He can decide for himself,” he says. “I will appear, and pitch the plan. He will love having a new family member who puts him and family above everything else. Him and ai have more in common than you and I.”

“Did you misunderstand? He is to be left alone.” Completely alone. This is non-negotiable.

liliummadara:

Itachi didn’t want it. “Not everyone has good taste.”

He let go of Itachi’s hands. “Sasuke and I will welcome you when you change your mind.”

“You are not to involve Sasuke in this.” To hell with being careful, this was his little brother at stake.

liliummadara:

“And that’s where you’re wrong. You and others of the current generations haven’t grown up with the clan pride and clan customs. State above clan, clan above self, self above outsiders.”

He wished Itachi would understand. He reached out. He took Itachi’s hands. “The lengths I’d go for you and Sasuke.”

“I have heard plenty.” Too much. Father’s retainers were exactly the kind of things he frowned upon. So they shared a surname– that didn’t make them inherently better than others.

The gesture is not returned, but he will let Madara have his hands for a few moments more. He’s thinking of Sasuke. …Sasuke needed to be kept out of this.

But…lengths? For him? Funny– since Madara was doing exactly what he disapproved of. Why him, though– why Sasuke as well. What was so important about them that Madara would try to act in their interest.

“This is not what I want.” He repeats. But quieter.

liliummadara:

“It can only be progress if it’s good. The future we have ahead of us now, is not progress. It is an intensification of a regressive system. That brought nothing but harm and destruction on our family.”

He puts the bingo book up-side-down and open on the sofa. He gets up. He spreads his arms in a letter T. “We must look after ourselves – live together! Only Uchiha can protect Uchiha. Me, you, Sasuke… living together… would you need anyone else?”

“I don’t share in the clan pride you and many others cling to. That is one of the things holding us back.” One thing he refused to take part in. He still has terrible, terrible memories of Yashiro, and being screamed at in clan meetings.

liliummadara:

That flinching, he loves it because it means his intimidation is working – even if it’s met with contempt. He loves the power surge he gets, the hype before a fight, and his whole body is ready to draw this conversation out into a physical battle just for battle’s sake.

“War cleanses the world.
And then there will be no more villages, no more propaganda, no more employing children to fight the fights of adults. Family will cluster together like the old days, and protect their own. That is my peace.”

The brief moment of fear he showed is gone. His resolve has to stick, else others will use him (more than they already have.)

“What you seek is utter destruction. Going back to how families operated in your youth is not forward progress.”

liliummadara:

“That’s because they see no other option. Your peace, the peace I set in motion…”

“…is WORTHLESS! It is corrupt, it’s radioactive toxic pretending to be a cure!”

That’s worrisome– aggression. It could easily bubble up into something worse, and his reflexes come to a brief flinch.

But Itachi steels himself together, and stands his ground, fists at his sides.

“Inciting a war is no way to fix corruption.” Itachi’s seen enough bloodshed for several lifetimes, he thinks.

liliummadara:

“Your peace is not a peace,” Madara said. He leaned back onto the sofa and stretched. He stuck out his hands, his feet, and he trembled. Then he relaxed. Good stretch.

“Yes. I would be a threat to it. It was a mistake to set up this peace, so I should correct it eventually.”

“It is not yours to meddle with, or correct.” The five great Nations were built upon a multitude of clans and families deciding not to fight, so how would fighting again fix that?

“My goal is peace, and violence is no way to attain it.”
