Their perception of adulthood is definitely different from ours, that’s true. I like to think, also, that part of the reason for Mikoto’s favoritism toward Sasuke has to do with the fact that she had him during a peaceful era instead of wartime when she had Itachi. So like Itachi, she may see Sasuke as a source of hope for the future. (basically Itachi is a victim of circumstance even when it comes to his own mother yikes)

[[ Consider, Itachi being able to be close to both his parents

Also yeah, Fugaku basically “took” Itachi and Sasuke was her chance to actually baby her child. Sasuke doesn’t actually have the kind of pressure on him that Itachi does. Besides his insecurity regarding Itachi and trying to get Fugaku’s attention amidst the clan/village crisis, he’s pretty free. ]]

I feel like she even convinces herself that Itachi doesn’t need her anymore after he saves her during the kyuubi attack. They both distance themselves from each other, thinking it’s for the best :/

[[ It’s probably a common mentality, too. Like– not to say it’s right, but it’s just how the culture works. The mother’s role extends to clothe and feed her children, and affection between parents/kids is usually reserved for the child under a certain age, the younger sibling (she was much more attached to sasuke than itachi), or if the child is a daughter (sakura > sarada and hinata >himawari).

Plus, (and I’ll have to find the passage again), you’re essentially an adult when you reach genin age. As in, a legal adult. It’s why Fugaku thinks Itachi has a girlfriend at 12. The only reason he tries to convince himself otherwise is because Itachi’s too focused on other things to give romance a chance, and not his age. To us it makes no sense, sure, but within the context of the universe the rules and what is “normal” changes. ]]

I like the idea of Itachi being asexual, I think is more accurate to the character

[[ The problem I have with that is the assumption that someone who doesn’t put much importance on sex or has a low sex drive is automatically asexual. Itachi can be hetero, or gay, or bi, and still have a low sex drive or not care for having sex. It also carries the assumption that non-asexual people constantly want sex. ]]
